While not a normal part of aging, many senior adults develop late-life depression. As the clinical presentation of late-life depression does vary tremendously from depression at other ages, this mental health disorder can lead to major impairments - including death - in older adults. This is why family and friends must remain vigilant and aware of the symptoms of late-life depression and encourage loved ones to seek treatment immediately. Due to the stresses of older adulthood, late-life depression is often more common than once thought. These stresses may include increased medical conditions, greater levels of disability, grief over the loss of friends and loved ones, and increasing fears over both health and financial security. Unfortunately, many elderly individuals dismiss even the most intense episodes of depression as a normal part of the aging process and do not report their own symptoms or receive proper treatment. With advances in the understanding of depression and its treatment, late-life depression is highly treatable and can lead to improved quality of life and reduction of the severe effects of untreated depression.

Mount Carmel Behavioral Health is a premier provider of outpatient services for adults age 18 and older. In our intensive outpatient program (IOP), we help individuals who are living with moderate symptoms of behavioral health concerns learn the skills they need to achieve a better quality of life. We treat a variety of mental health disorders as well as co-occurring substance use disorders. Patients may begin treatment at the IOP level or step down to the program from a higher level of care, such as inpatient or residential programming. The IOP can be an ideal option for those who do not require round-the-clock care but may benefit from structured, professional mental healthcare services. Patients in the IOP attend programming three days a week for three hours each day. The flexible schedule of an IOP can make it a desirable option for people who need to continue fulfilling their daily commitments while also receiving treatment. Patients can participate in our IOP for up to 10 weeks, during which time they can learn to manage disruptive symptoms in a productive manner and make strides toward lasting healing.

Forward Health is a substance use disorder treatment center that treats all of the factors that attribute to substance use disorder. On top of treating both substance use disorder and the mental health disorders that are associated with living in chaotic drug use, we also put a lot of emphasis on integration back into the community. We understand how important connection is when entering recovery. We have a staff of individuals with lived experience who are here to guide you back into the community. We put a huge emphasis on employment and are very plugged into the local economy to secure our clients' great jobs. Our therapists and case managers will then also help clients with life and financial skills to get them in the habit of saving money, paying bills, and rebuilding from the financial damage of their past. A lot of our staff, from ownership down, is in recovery. We’ve been there. And we know the way out. We treat both Substance Abuse and Co-occurring Disorders. We help our clients change their entire lives. With continued support and structure, our clients become responsible community members. We are deeply proud of the men and women who walk through our doors each day.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
