UCSD Center for Healthy Eating and Activity Research (CHEAR) offers individualized, unique, and evidence-based programs that integrate neurobiology, cognitive, biological, emotional, social and environmental contributors to treat a variety of eating behaviors. At CHEAR we are developing new cutting-edge treatments that are based on training your brain and your body to resist binge eating and overeating. Our clinical programs utilize neurobiological mechanisms to develop control over eating, including teaching participants to resist eating foods when physically full (resist cravings), to understand and detect hunger and fullness, to pay less attention to food and to train you to physically and psychologically resist unhealthy foods. We also utilize evidence-based treatments including Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Family-Based Therapy, and Behavioral Weight Loss. Our caring, experienced professionals are highly trained in the treatment of binge eating disorder and obesity, as well as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Our binge eating and weight loss no-cost research studies for adults and youth are also available.

Montecatini Eating Disorder Treatment Center serves adolescent girls and women ages 16-55 who have eating disorders and co-occurring mental health concerns and addictions. Because we recognize that eating disorders can be complex, we employ a range of treatment modalities, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). For clients who are struggling with co-occurring addictions, we may also incorporate the 12-Step model of recovery into their individualized treatment plan. In our residential program, clients can participate in individual therapy approximately three times per week. Family therapy is also available, and daily group therapy sessions — led by therapists, registered dietitians, nurses, art therapists, and more — give clients the chance to take part in evidence-based therapies, discuss relevant topics, and engage in creative activities, all in a group setting. Clients typically remain in our residential program for 30-60 days depending on their unique needs.

Newport Institute provides options for young adults and families at each step along the journey of healing. Our full continuum of care includes residential treatment centers; a full suite of outpatient programming, with Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), and outpatient services with a flexible number of days per week; continuing care through virtual sessions; and a robust Alumni program providing online and in-person events and support groups. All of our programs are accredited by the Joint Commission for Behavioral Healthcare. Through an in-depth assessment process, our clinical experts determine the optimal level of care for each client, at one of our residential or outpatient locations around the country. While it’s sometimes mistaken for perfectionism or germaphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a serious mental health condition that is typically diagnosed in adolescence. Newport Academy provides tailored treatment plans to heal the underlying causes and symptoms of OCD in teenagers. Our OCD programming for adolescents also addresses common issues that occur alongside OCD, such as generalized anxiety disorder, body dysmorphia, social anxiety, and panic disorders. Our OCD treatment incorporates Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy, considered the gold standard of care for OCD. In addition, our teen treatment plans for OCD include psychiatric care and medication management, family therapy, experiential activities like art and music therapy and outdoor adventures, and a robust academic component.

Akua Strong Facility at Long Beach offers outpatient dual-diagnosis treatment for adults suffering from substance use and mental health disorders. We provide IOP & PHP programs that include many treatment modalities, such as psychotherapy approaches, medications, and holistic approaches such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness therapies. Evidence-based treatment for dual-diagnosis disorders includes drugs or psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, or a combination. Medications are prescribed for specific conditions evaluated by our medical director: whereas psychotherapy, in one form or another, can be used for mental health disorders. We also provide medical evaluations and individual and group therapies and offer family therapy for those looking to rebuild relationships.

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides intensive daily therapy for substance use and mental health concerns, without overnight stays. It's ideal for inpatient transitions or those needing more support than traditional therapy. PHP is Monday through Friday, 5x a week. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides flexible treatment for substance use, with therapy and education sessions fitting into daily schedules. It's ideal for balancing recovery with personal, school, or work commitments. IOP is 3-5x a week, Monday-Friday, Mornings or Afternoons. If you need housing, we can help you find appropriate local transitional housing.
