Finding Help for your Teen

Most agree that the first responsibility of a parent is to keep their child safe. When you realize that your son or daughter is taking risks that may negatively impact the rest of their lives, it is time to reach out for help. In many cases, residential treatment is the best course of action when individual counseling or intensive outpatient programs have failed. Many programs treat negative behaviors or mental health issues but Elk River Treatment Program (ERTP) also treats the source of negative behavior. We accept boys and girls ages 12 - 18 from across the United States. Many or our patients are admitted due to negative behaviors, declining grades, poor peer choices, grief/loss, adoption issues, mental illness and/or dependency on alcohol or substances. ERTP specializes in treating teens with co-occurring conditions or dual diagnosis. Our mental health facility is licensed by the State of Alabama and accredited in Behavioral Health Care by The Joint Commission. While at ERTP, students in grades 6 - 12 attend our AdvancED/SACS accredited school year-round. Many excel in the more intimate classroom setting with one-on-one attention from Highly Qualified and State Certified Teachers.

Multidisciplinary Treatment Team

Our multidisciplinary treatment team is led by a child and adolescent forensic psychiatrist, and includes medical physicians, a licensed psychologist, licensed counselors, social workers, RNs, CRNP and state certified teachers. Our mission is to provide comprehensive care to meet the unique needs of each of our patients. Formal and informal therapy, traditional and experiential education, are utilized daily. ERTP also places a strong emphasis on family therapy and training. Since treatment plans are individualized, the length of stay varies according to the child's issues and response to treatment. Discharge planning is thorough and is coordinated with family, outpatient providers and community resources. Emphasis is placed on reintegrating the patient with parents/guardians, school and community.

Individualized Treatment and Education

ERTP incorporates evidence-based and empirically supported treatment modalities which are critical to the mental health of our patients. Based on the needs of the individual and family, treatment modalities might include: Transtheoretical Model, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Group Therapy, and Individual Therapy. Therapeutic workshops include abandonment, anger management, goal setting, accountability, communication skills, peer relations, and experiential learning. Specialty groups include AA/NA and optional Bible Study. Students that have been struggling in traditional classrooms often achieve academic success in our smaller classrooms with individualized attention from Highly Qualified and State Certified educators. Like the therapeutic component of ERTP, our academic program is individualized to meet the needs of each individual. Students may continue ERTP's education program after completing ERTP or return to their school of transfer.
