Benefits of Medication-Assisted Treatment
Medication-assisted treatment, or MAT, is a highly effective and widely respected service for adults who have become addicted to heroin, prescription painkillers, and other opioids. MAT has been endorsed by several reputable healthcare organizations, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and the World Health Organization (WHO). The two main components of MAT are prescription medication and therapy. The medications that are authorized for use in MAT can ease the cravings and other withdrawal symptoms that would typically occur when a person stops using opioids. When a person takes this medication as directed by the prescribing physician, they may be able to end their opioid use without experiencing the intense distress that is characteristic of opioid withdrawal. In addition to taking a prescription medication, MAT patients also participate in therapy. Therapy sessions can be optimal opportunities for people to learn about the disease of addiction, improve their conflict resolution capabilities, and acquire the relapse prevention skills that will support their recovery from opioid addiction. What to Expect
At New River Comprehensive Treatment Center (CTC), we realize that change can sometimes be difficult. This can be true even when you know that the change you are making is going to have a significant positive impact on your health and well-being. An untreated opioid addiction can have a profound negative impact on virtually all parts of a person’s life, including their self-esteem and sense of self. When you arrive at our center, you will enter a safe and supportive place where you will be treated with the respect you deserve. One of your first activities will be to complete a thorough assessment with a member of our medical staff. The professional who conducts this examination will then prescribe one of the following medications for you: methadone, buprenorphine, Suboxone, or Vivitrol. After your assessment, we can also set up your therapy schedule. Patients at New River CTC participate in individual and group counseling sessions. In addition to providing you with essential knowledge about addiction and recovery, therapy can introduce you to the benefits of sharing support with other people who have faced similar challenges and are working toward a common goal.
