Finding a therapist can be overwhelming- especially when you need one. I get it. I've been there, but just being here means you're on the right track. To get you started, I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation, so feel free to reach out. Even if we aren't the right fit, I'll refer you to someone who might be. I offer compassionate, open-minded therapy tailored to your needs. Shame, guilt and stigma are not a part of my practice. My focus is to understand things from your perspective and work together to enhance your sense of well-being. I offer teletherapy in both Louisiana and California.

You are not defined by the trauma you have endured. Anxiety, depression, and trauma can make it seem as if your life will forever be stuck on a constant, negative loop. The feelings of despair and hopelessness may have become so familiar that you accept them as your "normal." This pain can make it incredibly difficult to have hope and truly believe that, even for us, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The relief you crave, the joy you see in others (but have nearly convinced yourself is impossible for you), and the peace of mind you desire IS in fact possible, but you should not expect yourself do it alone.

I hear you. You've been going through the motions, avoiding the pain, sometimes barely hanging on, and trying to live a "normal," happy life. But, it all keeps creeping up and interrupts your hopes and goals, negatively impacts your day to day life, and creates relationships struggles. A childhood trauma might be coming up or a more recent traumatic event. Maybe you are struggling to move on after divorce. Either way, your life isn't going the way you want it to. I can help you heal and move beyond the experiences that are wreaking havoc on you, so that you can have the life and future that you want and deserve.

Sometimes it's just not easy and we get stuck repeating the same cycles because it's familiar but not helpful. Coping skills learned to survive in the past worked then but most likely are not helpful to you now which can be a great cause of you feeling anxious, depressed, stressed, or struggling with managing it all. I promise you are not alone. I believe in EMPOWERING you and truly want to support in your journey. I know that the most effective therapy that produces lasting results is through an honest and comfortable relationship between you and the therapist. Let's see if together we can be the best team moving you forward!

My clients are individuals and couples who are noticing that unresolved trauma and issues from the past are coming up now, negatively impacting their relationships. My clients are those who recognize that talk therapy alone will not solve their current issues. They recognize that a holistic approach to healing is essential to living a life that feels more free and aligned. My clients are usually curious about, or already utilize a variety of holistic healing modalities.

I bring something special to your therapy… Experience. ..as a therapist and also in my own personal therapy journey. I started working as a therapist in addictions in 1979 and there’s not much in the therapy world I haven’t treated in the years since. I use whichever therapy modality that will work best for you. I listen hard with respect and compassion. We develop a relationship based in honesty. Your treatment goals… dealing with your relationship, your addiction, codependency, depression, past trauma… we’ll figure it out, I know the way. Therapy is work, and the benefits are amazing.

When someone significant in your life is acting out, it’s maddening. Is it them?..is it you? Are you weighed down with the effects of being raised by emotionally immature parents? Regardless, something has to shift. If you're in that space with your child, parent, or someone else; you know it can be a source of real suffering. There may be anger, depression, anxiety..it is stressful at the very least. Don't do this alone. Let's talk.

"To the world you may be one person but to one person you may be the world"(Author unknown). When we are facing daily challenges in our lives, it can be difficult to see that we are loved, have a positive mindset, be grateful, feel good about ourselves, smile or have the motivation to do things which can negatively impact our daily functioning and relationships with others. My hope is that through therapy you will learn how to overcome these obstacles in order to become the best version of yourself and realize how important you are in this world.

Stress, trauma, disconnection, transition, stuckness. These are extremely difficult human experiences. Yet, our societies, cultures, and learned responses often tell us to move on, hide, or push away our real experiences. Having worked in a variety of international, educational, and clinical settings, I’ve been privileged to witness how exploring one’s challenges and pain can provide meaning, healing, and growth. Grounded in both the science and personalized applications of psychology and therapy, I believe the earlier we can process and make meaning of our experiences, the more meaningful life opportunities await.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in San Diego?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
