I work with individuals and couples whose lives have been interrupted by depression, anxiety, and trauma. Psychotherapy, like pastoral care and psychoanlysis, is "soul work" - self expression in the presence of a trusted friend and guide. In the safe space of the therapeutic relationship, thoughts and feelings, dreams and fantasies, desires and fears are spoken without judgment. Authentic verbal and emotional expression is transformative. As dysfunctional patterns of thought and behavior become clear, as shattered parts of the self are recognized and linked, health and a new wholeness can be achieved.

After 25 years of working in the field primarily offering individual therapy, I am now most interested in group therapy. My co-therapist and I offer two groups currently. Both groups have openings and are ongoing psychotherapy groups. There is nothing quite like the magic of therapy group. Group can immediately effect feelings of isolation, loneliness and supports healthy connections. Group can normalize human needs for a sense of belonging and support during these most uncertain times. I am accepting new patients and I hope to keep my practice relational with a strong focus on couples, families and group therapy.

As a counselor, I am passionate about creating a non-judgmental space for children and teens to identify healthy ways to manage and express their emotions. I utilize child-centered play therapy techniques, creative therapy techniques, and CBT techniques to help young people explore and utilize healthy coping skills. I believe in the power of strong family relationships whether it is the “biological” family or the “family” one has created through strong bonds. I am originally from Nebraska, am a novice hiker and enjoy exploring nature trails across North Carolina.

Do you feel like you are in the same relationships all the time no matter who you are with? Perhaps experiencing attachment to unhealthy patterns and/or people? Maybe you had an unpleasant medical experience and now fear care. Perhaps you look in the mirror and don't feel your best. Maybe you have difficulty saying "no" and lean towards "people-pleasing" tendencies. Because people would be mad at you, right? Do you have difficulty with boundaries? Maybe some FOMO or isolating in your sweats watching Netflix but you want more social interactions? If you answered yes to any or all of these, you are in the right place!

My focus is to assist children, adolescents, families, and adults to build positive self image through enhancing self esteem, improving social skills, and reducing family and peer conflicts. I work closely with parents to strengthen their limit setting, clear expectations, and conflict resolution abilities through improved communication skills. Setting limits and boundaries in all relationships and dynamics is a tool that I often use in my therapeutic process. Giving children, parents, couples and individuals tools to maneuver through the daily issues are tools and techniques that I focus on in our sessions.

Many of us have been trained to quiet our voice, quiet our body, stuff negativity away or worse bury it. Living in the world we do with impossible expectations placed on us, this cycle is perpetrated by encouraging us to distract ourselves or check out pretending this pain inside of us does not exist. But "the body keeps score", and it will find a way to remind us that this is not acceptable. This is especially difficult if you noticed your relationships are taking a hit or seem to be stagnant. We must end this cycle and create a new cycle of healing. My goal is to be that space where you can be you with all the quirks included.

I typically see clients presenting with ADHD, anxiety, anger management, behavioral struggles, depression, emotional regulation, grief and loss, relationship issues, school-related issues, learning difficulties, and self-esteem struggles. Feeling accepted as you are, openly expressing what you are thinking and feeling, and exploring new strategies for managing thoughts and feelings are basic to the counseling process. I strive to create a counseling relationship centered around these goals and am honored to accompany clients on their pathway toward greater self-understanding and acceptance.

I am passionate about working with men who have a desire to grow into the next greatest version of themselves. My life's purpose is to serve men who choose to walk the path of embodied presence. The walk on this path is not always easy. It can include suffering and heartache. These struggles have always been a part of the human experience. And, incredible transformation can occur when a man chooses to face these challenges in order to realize his full potential. I specialize in communication and relationship-building skills and bring more than 20 years of experience working with teens and adults in these areas.

As a psychologist with over 30 years of experience, I recognize that people typically come to counseling because they are either in some kind of pain or because they desire a better understanding of themselves. There are many diverse challenges, from temporarily overwhelming stressors and cultural issues to life-altering losses or traumas. If not dealt with, these can result in depression, anxiety, and feelings of inadequacy, and they can impact job performance, sleep, and/or important relationships. While uncomfortable, these symptoms can be a signal to address things you have perhaps known about but have been putting off.

Sometimes we are so overwhelmed by our circumstances that we can’t see a way out. In an attempt to feel better, we fall into unhealthy patterns and habits that ultimately keep us stuck or make things worse. It can permeate our personal, professional and interpersonal lives but there is still hope. If you desire freedom for yourself and peace in your relationships, you've found a great starting place.

Life is a marathon and I believe that it is all about endurance. Sometimes we have to get a little help along the way whether it be a change of shoes, re-uptake of protein or a water break. There is this idea that we are weak when we seek others to help us out, but I also know that in life we cannot always persevere without a helping hand. I look forward to being an option of that new running shoe or Gatorade as we stride through the finish line together.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Charlotte?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
