Most students that attend Alpine Academy experience severe anxiety and/or depression. This impedes their ability to function successfully at home, in school, and with friends. Trauma has touched their lives in such a way that many have a hard time getting to the root of the problem and learning to express their overwhelming emotions in a healthy manner. Typically our students are bright and capable in school, but emotional disturbances prevent them from being successful in the classroom and in relationships with peers. Oftentimes this leads to them avoiding school and in-person social interaction, opting instead to immerse themselves in the online world of social media and gaming. Our students tend to implode rather than explode, and self-harm and suicidal thoughts, gestures, and attempts may become ways they have coped with their pain. Generally, Alpine students have a strong desire to be able to return to the hobbies, interests, and activities that they used to enjoy doing.

Newport Academy’s philosophy of care is mental health primary: We address the underlying trauma and attachment wounds that catalyze mental health conditions and co-occurring disorders, including depression, anxiety, mood disorders, substance abuse, self-harm, and eating disorders. At Evolve Mount Helix, we provide the highest caliber of evidence-based residential treatment for adolescents ages 12-17 struggling with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, self-harming or high-risk behaviors, suicidality, aggression, defiance, trauma, and other emotional/behavioral issues. Our primary modes of treatment are Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), integrated with Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Behavioral Activation, and other data-driven modalities. We believe treatment works best when it is individually tailored. Our clinical staff conducts a comprehensive evaluation of each teen pre- and post-admission in order to develop a highly detailed treatment plan that considers the patient’s individual history and symptoms. Our robust clinical program includes individual and family therapy, psychiatry, academic support, and daily groups (on DBT Skills Training, Anger Management, Relapse Prevention, and Seeking Safety). Teens also participate in experiential therapies: equine-assisted therapy, music, art, fitness, yoga, and more. We also offer 12-Step/ SMART Recovery programs for those struggling with dual diagnoses or addiction.

At THIRA, we specialize in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and even have Dr. Kathryn Korslund (a key researcher and developer of DBT methods and training) on staff. Originally developed at the University of Washington by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., DBT was first designed to treat interpersonal chaos, intense emotional swings, impulsiveness, confusion about the self (identity), and suicidal behavior. It is based on a bio-social theory that states that problems develop from the interaction of biological factors (physiological makeup) and environmental factors (learning history), which together create difficulty managing emotions. DBT is therefore appropriate for a range of additional problems that relate to emotion dysregulation such as depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, anger-related problems, and substance use problems. A great deal of research has been conducted on the effectiveness of DBT and, in general, DBT appears as effective or more effective than other “talk based” psychotherapies for the problems mentioned above.

At PTT we provide residential care for teenagers who struggle with mental and emotional health issues through a custom tailored 30-60 day residential treatment program. Our program, staffed by experienced, highly trained professionals, is dedicated to treating the contemporary issues facing today’s teenagers. We focus on personalized treatment, which includes completing comprehensive diagnostic testing, developing a treatment plan tailored to the needs of each client, and closely monitoring progress. We believe in a collaborative and family focused approach towards treatment with all family members playing an integral role in the treatment process. We focus on identifying and treating the core mental or emotional health issues that impact teens and their families. While the focus is on the underlying mental and emotional health issues, we treat teenagers who struggle with substance abuse, trauma, grief, self harm, eating disorders, personality disorders as well as other behavioral, mental and/or emotional health issues.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment proven to help teens struggling with emotion dysregulation, self-harming behavior, suicidal ideation, and other mental health issues. Evolve’s Comprehensive DBT residential treatment center is the first of its kind in California and one of only a handful in the entire country. Many of our teens struggle with depression, anxiety, trauma, borderline personality disorder, addiction or other high-acuity issues. We offer individual therapy (at least 3 times a week), family therapy (2 times a week, with out-of-state families participating remotely), DBT Skills Training Groups (4 times a week), and skills-coaching (24/7). Teens learn how to practice Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance, and Interpersonal Effectiveness within a warm, accepting environment. We have one of the highest staff:patient ratios in the nation, serving only six teens at any given time. Our adherence to Comprehensive DBT protocols, trained DBT clinicians, and deep commitment to safety are reasons why thousands of families from all over the country choose Evolve’s DBT treatment center for their teens.
