Do you struggle with feelings of anxiety, depression, guilt or low self-esteem? Do you find yourself avoiding social engagements or so preoccupied with excessive worrying? Finding ways to navigate these difficult feelings can help you get back on track. I use a psychodynamic approach and CBT that focuses on uncovering patterns of behavior and ways of relating to ourselves and others that are often outside of our awareness. I also consider how our past impacts who we are today. Through acceptance and empathy, we will establish a trusting therapeutic relationship and work together toward your personal growth and self-discovery.

Maybe you've been stuck and unable to see your way forward, or feel a burden you can't quite relieve. Often times we can find our way with the support of family or friends. But sometimes we need the help of a certified professional. I view therapy through the lens of self compassion, understanding and collaboration. It is a moving dialogue that shapes our healing. The development of a therapeutic relationship and interventions are individualized because mental health treatment is more than treating symptoms and a diagnosis.

There are times in everyone's life when we experience challenges and difficulties. Whether it be problems in our relationships or adjusting to a life transition, these challenges may affect our well-being, but they can also present an opportunity for growth and positive change.

After decades in the healthcare field as a staff, student, psychologist, educator and executive leader, I am embracing a new chapter by providing psychological and consultation services. Over time, I have worked, supervised, taught, and mentored successful individuals who have called me, “visionary, strategic, results oriented, culturally and emotionally attuned, practical, funny and caring” among many others. I appreciate the fact that no one size fits all. I also understand that cultural, environmental, and contextual factors are integral in our decisions whenever we come to a fork on the road and must be make one.

My work with people is very directive and focuses on the strengths in each person while noting what wasn't working. Clearly identifying the obstacles to healthier ways of relating and then very specifically identifying how to shift into new and effective ways of relating. My way of working is humanistic and I keep my client informed as we go...empowering them to "own" what we discover so they can transform the aspects of themselves and their lives. My approach is non-pathologizing, strength-based and solution-focused.

I believe that all of us, at different times in our lives, may face unexpected challenges. Whatever you may be feeling—overwhelm, sadness, worry, frustration, exhaustion, loneliness—if these feelings persist, you can find some relief, and you don’t have to do it alone. Taking the steps to start a professional relationship with a trusted therapist can be healing and life changing. As you explore and reflect on what may be happening in your life right now, you’ll gain greater clarity about what deeply matters most to you, and develop a more authentic connection to yourself and others you care about.

Hello, I'm Beth Elliott-Staggs, a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist. I've been providing individual, couples, and group therapy for over 20 years. I feel privileged to work in this field and am inspired by my clients' courage and growth. When providing therapy, my first goal is to build rapport with my client(s) by providing a safe, comfortable, and non-shaming environment. From there, I invited the client to guide the sessions and offered my wisdom and expertise if necessary. My belief is that we all have our own innate wisdom about how to heal if given the opportunity and support.

Accepting NEW clients! As human beings, we are told that we're broken, flawed, and unworthy. But my lived experience has been absolutely the opposite--we are whole, intentional, and powerful beings. This truth has been clouded by our traumas, histories, and social beliefs. External disapproval, hate, and cultural forces have often been deterrents in my own journey. With support from my community, and finding the strength to heal my traumas, I have been able to find my path--both connected to others but also uniquely mine.

As a sensitive and deeply feeling person, you struggle to navigate big feelings, sensory stimulation, and a strong emotional response to the state of the world today. You are impacted by the world around you, and are privy to the pain of others who suffer. The weight of a hurting world lives inside you, along with all that you sometimes struggle to feel. You are sensitive, spiritually inclined, and committed to personal and collective transformation. You are seeking a space of support and accountability, where you can develop the capacity and mindset to grow, expand, and open, through those times when things feel “too much.”

You have felt different from others most of your life. You're tired of being constantly told that you are too sensitive or emotional. You feel too much. You require so much more alone time and downtime than most people. You believe in the good of others and that has sometimes caused you deep hurt in your relationships. It's exhausting and lonely being the person everyone goes to for advice and perspective. You're an old soul and you see the world differently. But the world seems so unkind to you in return. You've given so much and worked so hard but continue to feel unseen by those you care about. I see you.

If you are someone attempting to enhance your self-compassion and connect to your true self, I am here. Self-awareness is as pleasant as a stubbed toe in the middle of the night when you get up for a drink of water. Therapy is the light you turn on that forces your eyes shut for a moment while your eyes adjust to the light and you can open them fully. You then shut the light off, adjust your eyes to the dark, more awake than before, and now make your way through the dark with the ability to avoid stubbing your toe.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in San Jose?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
